Syntax and Usage of data types

  • Difference between lexical and value domain
    • Lexical: "3.14", "+04.1300", "-2,5"
    • Value: 3.14, 4.13, -2.5
  • Untyped literals get treated like char sequences
    • "02" < "100" < "11" < "2" (lexicographic order)
  • Typing allows to handle values 'semantically'
    • Data types will be identified by URIs
    • Syntax: "VALUE"^^data type URI
    • In fact data type labels are freely selectable URIs
  • Most commonly one uses XML Schema data types (XSD)
    • Further complexity beyond this should be modelled using additional RDF properties.
    • Example: "2,718 km"
